What is this we call attitude? (Part II)

In sport, attitude is a decisive factor for both performance and overall well-being. It includes the way athletes think, feel and behave, which together shape how they approach training and competition. As coaches, understanding and nurturing a positive attitude in our athletes is essential to their success. This article explores the positive factors that build a good attitude, and offers ideas on how coaches can effectively cultivate these qualities to enhance performance and motivation.

Positive factors that build a good attitude

  • Useful and functional thinking: Encouraging athletes to replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations helps them stay focused and motivated. For example, instead of thinking “I can’t do this”, an athlete should think “I’ll give it my best shot”.
  • Good emotional regulation: Athletes who manage their emotions effectively can stay calm under pressure and bounce back quickly from setbacks. Techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness and visualisation help regulate emotions.
  • Clear goals: Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals (SMART) keeps athletes motivated and focused. Short- and long-term goals help them see progress and stay engaged with their training.
  • Solid self-esteem: Believing in one’s own abilities is fundamental for a positive attitude. Coaches can build athletes’ confidence through positive reinforcement and by celebrating their achievements, however small.
  • Social and team support: Feeling supported by teammates and coaches creates a positive environment. Encouraging team-building activities and open communication promotes mutual support and camaraderie.
  • Resilience and adaptability: Resilient athletes can recover from failure and adapt to new challenges. Coaches should foster a growth mindset, where athletes see setbacks as opportunities to learn and improve.
  • Habit of reflection and continuous learning: Encouraging athletes to reflect on their performance and pursue continuous improvement helps them stay engaged and motivated. Offering opportunities to learn new skills and strategies is key.
  • Effective time management: Finding the balance between sport, studies and personal life is essential. Coaches can help athletes develop time-management skills so they can meet all their commitments without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle: Good nutrition, restful sleep and regular physical activity are the foundation of a positive attitude. Coaches should educate athletes about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and lead by example.

Understanding the factors that shape an athlete’s attitude is essential for coaches who want to foster a positive, supportive and productive environment. By addressing both positive and negative factors, coaches can help their athletes build the resilience, confidence and motivation they need to succeed in sport and in life.
