What is the PSYCOACH project?

PSYCOACH is an innovative initiative aimed at improving the training of sport coaches, with a particular focus on the psychological dimensions of coaching and on communication. Co-funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ Sport programme, the project’s main goal is to enhance athlete performance and well-being through more conscious and effective coaching practice.

Project objectives

PSYCOACH focuses on several key objectives that together aim to transform the way coaches approach sport training:

  • Strengthen psychological intervention: Provide coaches with tools and knowledge to better understand the psychological factors that shape athletic performance. Promote the use of emotional regulation techniques, goal setting and self-confidence building.
  • Improve communication: Train coaches in effective communication skills to enhance their interaction with athletes. Promote communication that motivates, supports and guides athletes in a constructive way.
  • Foster well-being and inclusion: Build coaching environments that pursue both performance and overall athlete well-being. Develop strategies that promote inclusion and equity in sport, ensuring that every athlete has the opportunity to thrive.

Course structure

The PSYCOACH course is organised in five thematic modules, each addressing a key dimension of sport coaching:

  1. Understanding the athlete: How coaches can better understand their athletes, identifying their needs and motivations. Focus on athlete attitude and the positive and negative factors that shape performance.
  2. Sport performance and psychological skills: Definition of sport performance and of the psychological skills needed to achieve it. Practical strategies to develop these skills in athletes.
  3. Effective communication: Communication techniques coaches can use to improve their interaction with athletes. The role of communication in motivation and team performance.
  4. Tools for conscious coaching: Introduction to the intervention procedure based on Joan Vives’ consciousness chain. Practical tools to improve attention and focus during training.
  5. Opening the door to inclusion: The importance of inclusion in sport and how coaches can foster an inclusive environment. Strategies to ensure that every athlete, whatever their background, feels valued and supported.

Methodology and resources

PSYCOACH uses a practical, accessible methodology designed to be completed in approximately two and a half months. Coaches have access to an online platform with training videos, practical resources and a discussion forum.

Live interaction and ongoing support

To ensure a complete learning experience, the course includes two live Zoom sessions. These sessions take place after modules 2 and 3, and again after modules 4 and 5, giving participants the chance to clarify questions and deepen what they have learned. The discussion forum is another key tool of the course, where coaches can share experiences, ask questions and receive support both from their peers and from the teaching team.
