What is this we call attitude? (Part I)

Athlete attitude is shaped by the interaction of three essential elements: thinking patterns, emotions and behaviour. As coaches, we can begin to assess our athletes’ attitude through observable behaviours. We then need to engage in active communication with them to understand the meanings, feelings and context that underlie their attitude — so that we can intervene effectively to support performance and well-being in sport.

Positive factors that build a good attitude

  1. Useful and functional thinking
  2. Good emotional regulation
  3. Clear goals
  4. Solid self-esteem
  5. Social and team support
  6. Resilience and adaptability
  7. Habit of reflection and continuous learning
  8. Effective time management
  9. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Negative factors that produce a poor attitude

  1. Lack of confidence
  2. A bad past experience
  3. Injury
  4. Lack of skill
  5. Fear of taking part
  6. Stress when competing
  7. Making mistakes
  8. Fear of failure
  9. Fear of injury
  10. Negative role models
  11. Lack of family or peer support
  12. Prejudice and stereotypes
  13. Poor communication from the coach
  14. Negative team dynamics

Understanding the factors that shape an athlete’s attitude is essential for coaches who want to foster a positive, supportive and productive environment. By addressing both positive and negative factors, coaches can help their athletes build the resilience, confidence and motivation they need to succeed in sport and in life.
