Chema Buceta reflects on the European Athletics Championships from a sport-psychology perspective

Sport psychologist Chema Buceta — one of the most veteran and respected voices in the field in Spain, a reference author in coach training and applied performance psychology — has published a piece on the European Athletics Championships on his blog at Munideporte. A text that puts uncomfortable and necessary questions on the table about how athletes deal with failure, pressure and public exposure.

Four key ideas from the article

1. Name failure, don’t hide it

Buceta warns of the risk of emotional over-protection when an athlete underperforms. He quotes Adrián Ben, eliminated in the 1500 m semi-final: “It has been a failure”. And he sums up: “We should not fear the word failure, or fear admitting that we have failed. You fail when you set yourself a goal and don’t reach it”. A powerful message against the “I’m very happy” discourse after a poor result.

2. Support helps; over-protection hurts

He draws a clear line between emotional support (needed) and emotional shielding (counter-productive): “Understanding and support help those who fail; over-protection prevents them from learning from what happened”. Negative emotion serves a function; blocking it prevents constructive self-critique.

3. Managing social media is part of the elite job

Faced with complaints about negative comments online, Buceta is direct: “Being an elite athlete is not only training hard (…) it also means accepting and learning to manage the circumstances that come with the job, such as public exposure”. Without justifying anonymous excesses, he stresses that the mental management of media exposure is another professional competence.

4. The pressure of “having to win”

The article closes with a reflection on what he calls the “pressure of having to win” that surrounds great champions and successful teams: “To stay at the top (…) they must be able to accept and manage the pressure of having to win”. A useful read for coaches and psychologists working with athletes in the consolidation stage.
